If you’re a software junkie, you’ve got a zillion programs. Most come with docs conveniently named “Read Me,” which means you have to keep track of their owners. RdMe comes to the rescue! In the Finder, when any file with a ’RdMe’ resource is dragged-and-dropped onto the RdMe application, the contents of the RdMe resource are displayed in this window. Thus, the use of ’RdMe’ resources obviates the separate doc files and separate folders. If you have a file and a Read me, drop them both on RdMe, and it will put the the docs directly into the RdMe resource, and you can toss the docs! In this case, conversion between Mac (or Apple II), MS-DOS, and Unix are what is done. Features include - Converts the file "in-place" - you don't have to bother with extensions to the filename to get rid of or tons of duplicate files; Very safe - any error aborts the process, leaving the file being converted untouched. Abortable at any point. Checks the file for resource forks and "illegal" ASCII codes and does warnings - you can then choose to stop, skip, continue, or just do them all. And here is the first time, but not the last by any means, where I warn you that ClickOff does not save any unsaved work. ClickOff is not intended to be used interchangeably with the ShutDown command. Clickoff is intended to turn off your Mac when you cannot be present to use the ShutDown command. In addition, ClickOff will not turn off your Macintosh if there is a dialog box open, waiting for a mouse click or some other user interaction. If you like to leave your Mac doing hard work while you go out and play, this application can be used to shut down in your absence. To provide the maximum in speed and convenience, Alias Director makes extensive use of the drag-and-drop feature of System 7. While there is extensive Balloon Help provided, it is still advisable to read the documentation carefully to be sure you are fully aware of its feature set and how to access those features. New to version 3.1 is the ability to configure the drop keys for invoking Alias Director's myriad drag and drop options. However, for the sake of simplicity, the following describes the use of drag and drop using the default drop key settings. System 7 is required. "StuffIt compress" compresses files dropped onto it. Each item dropped is compressed into its own StuffIt archive and deleted afterwards. "StuffIt archive" compresses files dropped onto it. All items dropped onto it are compressed into a single StuffIt archive and deleted afterwards. "Add to sit Archive" adds items dropped onto it to a user-selectable StuffIt archive. Then you need "Quit All Applications"! "Quit All Applications" quits all your applications in one step, and is designed to be completely unobtrusive. When you select "Quit All Applications", each of your applications are told to quit, no questions asked, just like when you select "Restart" or "Shut Down". There is also a way to quit the finder, and rebuild the desktop (details in documentation!). Requires System 7. A submenu in your Apple Menu will let you maintain a list of your frequently used printers. Only useful if you use more than one printer! After you have installed PrintChoice and rebooted, your Apple menu will have a new submenu called PrintChoice, containing options to add, rename, or delete printers. After choosing any printer from the standard Apple Chooser, you can make it easily accessible by adding it to the PrintChoice menu. Requires System 7. Its primary function is to aid in locating and accessing files, folders and documents on a large volume or across a network. It achieves this task by placing a window with an array of cells which hold items (applications, folders, documents etc...) in their iconized form. If you have a clutter of icons scattered about your desktop, then PowerDock is the perfect utility for you. Requires System 7 and color. It can be used for launching applications and documents, restart and shut down, various file management functions, and executing FKEYs. OtherMenu takes up a minimum of about 14K of system memory, but uses more depending on the length of the menu and the number of submenus. The contents of OtherMenu’s menu is determined by the contents of the OtherMenu Folder. All files and aliases placed in the OtherMenu Folder become OtherMenu menu items. And you can put in folders, and aliases of folders and volumes, to create submenus up to 5 levels deep. Requires System 7. That’s all it does, and that’s all it’ll ever do. I wrote it because I didn’t have any other use for my caps lock key. It doesn’t patch any traps, so it’s less likely to be the cause of conflicts than some other INITs. Name = FolderWatcher 2.02.cpt Path = AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:F:FolderWatcher 2.02.cpt Size: 66K Date:11/20/93 Version: 2.02 Description: FolderWatcher 2.02 - Folder Watcher is a faceless background application (actually a control panel and extension) that keeps an eye on an unlimited number of folders on your Macintosh, or a remote Macintosh or server. If the contents of any of these folders ever change, Folder Watcher will respond by showing an alert, playing a system beep or a custom sound, writing to a log file, executing an AppleScript script, or any combination of these. Version 2.0.2 was compiled with THINK C 6.0. Requires System 7. Name = FaberZooms 1.1.1.cpt Path = AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:F:FaberZooms 1.1.1.cpt Size: 10K Date:11/20/93 Version: 1.1.1 Description: FaberZooms 1.1.1 - FaberZooms is a DarkSide of the Mac module. DarkSide is a free, yet wonderful and non-obtrusive screen-saver from Tom Dowdy. This screen saver will not patch the Operating System, avoiding the dreaded conflicts you may have experienced with other screen savers. The algorithm I use is quite fast, but keep in mind that FaberZooms does not run as fast as it could. The Mac host might have useful calculations to do, so I gently "relinquish the processor". Version 1.1.1 is updated for use with DarkSide 4.1, and emits a sound while the rectangle moves. Name = ExAminer 1.0.cpt Path = AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:E:ExAminer 1.0.cpt Size: 57K Date:11/20/93 Version: 1.0 Description: ExAminer 1.0 - Here is ExAminer 1.0, a System Folder maintenance utility for Apple Macintosh computers. With ExAminer you can "mine" for extensions and things in the System Folder. You can change what is enabled and what is disabled, and you can create "sets" of configurations. You can think of ExAminer as a tool that either "mines" (digs) for Extensions and Apple Menu Items (and more) items or lets you "examine" the System Folder. Requires System 7. ExAminer is compatible with multiple monitors and large screen monitors. Name = Enigma2.1a.cpt Path = AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:E:Enigma2.1a.cpt Size:110K Date:11/20/93 Version: 2.1a Description: Enigma2.1a - Enigma 2.1 is an application which can provide near absolute protection for your sensitive documents and applications. By downloading this application you can encrypt files using a limited version of the Government Standard DES algorithm. For only $15 this can be upgraded to the full DES standard (US and Canada only). If you would prefer your neighbors not see your accounting data, your co-workers not see your performance appraisal, or your competitor see your trade secrets then Enigma is an application you will find very valuable. Version 2.1 contains user interface upgrades and bug fixes to Enigma 2.0. Requires System 7. Also included is a program that overwrites and delete files. Name = DiskCharmer2.1.1.cpt Path = AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:D:DiskCharmer2.1.1.cpt Size: 46K Date:11/20/93 Version: 2.1.1 Description: DiskCharmer2.1.1 - Disk Charmer is a small utility for erasing stacks of floppy disks. It sports background formatting, but only when the new Thread Manager is present. You should notice that Disk Charmer allows switching among applications while operating. This happens because I use "asynchronous" reads and writes from/to the disks. Macs with I/O chips (IIfx, Quadra 800, 900, 950, and probably the Workgroup Servers) do not slow down while reading the entire disk. This version of Disk Charmer was written because the author wanted a drag & drop eraser with every possible option and a nice, easy to use interface. Requires System 7. System 6 users can use version 1.4.6, in the Utilities section. 2.1.1 contains bug fixes. Name = DesktopFileKiller1.2.cpt Path = AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:D:DesktopFileKiller1.2.cpt Size: 6K Date:11/20/93 Version: 1.2 Description: DesktopFileKiller1.2 - Weather you know it or not all your disks have a file on them called the desktop file. This file helps your computer keep track of what files are on your disk. The problem is that this file never gets cleaned up, When you remove files from your disk their entry is not removed from the desktop file. So after much usage this file get unnessarily large, I've seen them as large as 100K. DesktopFile Killer (DtF Killer for short) removes this file. A new, smaller, one is then created. To activate DtF Killer drag a disk icon to Dtf Killer's icon. DtF Killer will then atempt to delete the desktop file for that disk. Name = Monitor Switch 1.1.cpt Path = AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:M:Monitor Switch 1.1.cpt Size: 78K Date:11/10/93 Version: 1.1 Description: Monitor Switch 1.1 - Monitor Switch is an application for the Macintosh which allows you to switch resolutions on your multisync monitor without the hassle of changing the cable that is connected to the built-in video. It is similar to commercial programs, but it is compatible with more Macintosh models, allows switching to more resolutions, and is more compatible with other software (it is an application rather than an INIT/CDEV, and it doesn’t patch any traps). Compatible with LC III, Centris, Quadras, AV's, some Duos and some Powerbooks. Definitely read the "Warning" document before launching, or you may be very sad! Name = DesktopValet 3.0.cpt Path = AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:D:DesktopValet 3.0.cpt Size: 9K Date:11/10/93 Version: 3.0 Description: DesktopValet 3.0 - End desktop clutter forever! Avoid the most tedious file operations. This utility will move, delete, shred or alias files that are dropped on it. Put copies of it in your Apple Menu, on your launch pad, or in deep folders. Make aliases of it on your desktop and rename them according to the desired option. Keep a number of Valets around in convenient places. With them, you can move, delete, and alias files quickly and easily. Just double click on a Valet to choose your options. The drag and drop interface is pretty self explanatory. Desktop Valet does not work on floppy disks. Desktop Valet now recognizes Apple Events! Requires System 7. Name = Daylight 4.01.cpt Path = AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:D:Daylight 4.01.cpt Size: 30K Date:11/10/93 Version: 4.01 Description: Daylight 4.01 - Daylight! 4.01 is a Daylight Saving Time adjustment Extension/control panel. It makes the necessary one hour time changes from year to year for you without you having to worry about it. It also gives the dates that the hour changes on. Daylight! also give the history of Daylight Savings Time. This version adds support for the Daylight Saving Time bit in the parameter RAM. This is a great fix because now it doesn't matter if you boot from different drives - the computer's PRAM knows if you're in DST or not. Works fine with a Plus, which surprised me. Requires System 7. Of course most of Arizona does not need this control panel, but you can use it to learn the dates that the rest of the country changes on. Name = Color7 1.2.cpt Path = AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:C:Color7 1.2.cpt Size: 28K Date:11/10/93 Version: 1.2 Description: Color7 1.2 - For years there have been Control Panels for coloring windows and buttons for System 6. Now there is a Control Panel that lets you do the same stuff with System 7 windows. Color7 lets you change the colors of windows, buttons, menus, and text highlighting under System 7. Great when it comes to changing the colors of those beveled edges and highlighted zoom box. There is a revert button, if what you create just doesn't look right. This updated version of Color7 fixes a bug in the button drawing, so that it doesn't constantly redraw while under 24-bit mode. It also keeps the colors from changing incorrectly after choosing a color. Name = Zipple 1.8.cpt Path = AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:U-Z:Zipple 1.8.cpt Size: 45K Date:11/10/93 Version: 1.8 Description: Zipple 1.8 - Zipple is a control panel and extension for System 7 which allows you to replace the titles of your Apple, Balloon Help, Keyboard (if you have one), and Application menus with animated images, in color if you have a color screen. The displayed image can depend on the frontmost application, if you like. You can use the ready-made images that come with Zipple, or create your own with the sophisticated editor in the control panel. Changes - eliminated masks; You can now change the speed of Zipple's animation for each menu; The Grabber can now grab kcs and kcs4 resources; Zipple no longer crashes when the Import/Export or Grabber windows are brought up; plus more things! Name = WrapScreen1.3.cpt Path = AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:U-Z:WrapScreen1.3.cpt Size: 9K Date:11/10/93 Version: 1.3 Description: WrapScreen1.3 - This control panel lets your screen wrap onto itself - your mouse can exit through the right edge and reenter on the left. You can choose to wrap horizontally, vertically or both by checking the appropriate boxes in the control panel. Changes take effect as soon as you close the control panel, and are remembered for the next restarts. You can also choose not to wrap vertically on the main monitor (useful to catch the menus), and not to wrap in the corners of the main monitor (useful also for the menus, and for screen savers). This version is fully compatible with multiple screen systems. The mouse will wrap correctly one monitor to the next, just don't lose that pointer!! Name = SpokesDaemon&Spiricom.cpt Path = AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:S:SpokesDaemon&Spiricom.cpt Size:287K Date:11/10/93 Version: Description: SpokesDaemon&Spiricom - SpokesDaemon and Spiricom are two separate programs which together utilize some of Apple's latest technology to enhance your computing experience. SpokesDaemon is a 'faceless background application' (similar to a 'daemon' on a UNIX computer) which accepts and processes requests from other applications for text-to-speech services. Spiricom is the program that you can use to communicate with, configure, and test SpokesDaemon. Spiricom is necessary because SpokesDaemon is a 'faceless' application; in other words, SpokesDaemon has no menus, no windows, and no buttons. Requires System 7 and Speech Manager 1.0 or higher. Name = PowerScan 2.0.cpt Path = AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:P-Q:PowerScan 2.0.cpt Size:270K Date:11/10/93 Version: 2.0 Description: PowerScan 2.0 - Welcome to PowerScan 2.0! This application started out as a hack that would list duplicate files on a friend’s hard disk. As always, computer programs grow far beyond initial expectations and PowerScan 1.0 was born. After releasing it to the public I got a lot of feedback and ideas for this version. Among other things asked for were printing and better filtering. Well, here it is! Another thing supported in this version is Apple’s Thread Manager which gives you (kind of) multi-tasking when scanning and processing file lists. Completely redesigned user interface with a floating palette for easy access to settings and commands. There are too many other improvements to list! Requires System 7. Accurately estimates how much battery life remaining - and it learns to adjust the estimate to be more accurate for your particular PowerBook. Multiple battery support. Color & grayscale support. Battery charger status. Stand-alone application, for minimum conflicts and maximum RAM flexibility. Plus more. Powerbook owners rejoice! Now supports the PowerBook 165, Duo 250 and Duo 270c, plus the new Type II longer lasting batteries. You can choose every hour, half-hour, or quarter-hour as you prefer, and when you startup the time, you will be told "about" what time it is. You can also choose to have the day told to you (I recommend just being told once a day!), and can choose between a male or male voice. This file contains the female voice only. The Invisible Clock Sounds file contains digitized voice in 'snd ' resources. Using a sound editing program such as SoundEdit Pro, you can record your own voice for announcing the time. Just replace any 'snd ' resource with another of the same name. The "PowerBook" or "Portable" Control Panel provided by Apple only allows you to enter a single wakeup time. This prevents you from scheduling multiple wake-up sessions. For example, if you wanted to send your faxes at 1:00am, and then download some files at 2:00am, you'd have to stay up until 1:00am, and reset the wakeup timer manually. Insomniac is a very convenient program for automatically sending faxes or email in the middle of the night. Insomniac allows you to program up to fifty wakeup events (only two until you register it for $10). DarkSide is a free, yet wonderful and non-obtrusive screen-saver by Tom Dowdy. DarkShutdown works by sending a restart or shutdown Apple Event to the Finder (or At Ease); the net effect is the same as if you had chosen "Restart" or "Shut Down" in the Finder. The Finder will politely close all your open applications, then restart or power off your Mac if software-power off capable. DarkShutdown may be used on any Mac with DarkSide 4.1, which requires System 7 or later. Have you ever wanted to open/save a document into a place where the Finder already has a window opened for it? If you see the window in the Finder you can instantly make that your current folder simply by clicking on it. If you want to select the desktop, simply click on the desktop. If the open/save dialog should happen to obscure the Finder window you are looking for, then simply drag it out of the way by dragging it from any point along the frame! Requires System 7. Name = ChunkJoiner 1.0.1.cpt Path = AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:C:ChunkJoiner 1.0.1.cpt Size: 19K Date:11/10/93 Version: 1.0.1 Description: ChunkJoiner 1.0.1 - ChunkJoiner is a small utility that lets you join (concatenate) any number of files in a single chunk. To use it, simply select the files you want to join, and drag & drop them onto ChunkJoiner. You will be asked the “type” and “creator” for the newly created file. You will be also asked for the name of the application which can open the resulting file; I have added this because the Finder 7.x can read this name and show it to the user if the application is not present. Note that no other information is kept into these “Icon” files. Folder Icon Cleaner correctly removes the icon by deleting the file (and by updating the “Use custom icon” attribute of the folder). No data is lost, you only gain a little more free space on your disk. If Applicon's tiles are all hidden behind other windows, moving the mouse to a "hot spot" in a corner of the screen will bring them forward. Applicon itself is just an application. The only difference between a ramdisk and a normal disk is that when you turn the power off to your Mac, or restart, the contents of the ramdisk are lost. This is one reason AppDisk has several options to automatically save a copy of the ramdisk contents onto your hard disk. Being a programmer nerd and all I decided to look into it and discovered this - there's a bug with System 7.1's Fonts folder. The result of the bug is that every font on your Mac is loaded and locked down forever and ever, taking up lots of memory that is supposed to be reused by applications. Fonts Folder Tuner changes the buggy byte to what it should be. It doesn't install extensions or mess with any other files besides the System file. You only need to run Fonts Folder Tuner once. It does just what a screen saver is supposed to do and not much else. It is an application which only uses about 30k of RAM and 12k of disk space. Being a background application, it will not show up in the application menu and won't always end up in your face when you quit other applications. However, to lively things up a little I tried to alter the look of the interface somewhat. Will this be the System 8 look, perhaps. The DOSWasher application will toggle text documents, dragged onto it, from MS-DOS to Macintosh formats and vice versa. It's even possible to mix Mac and DOS formats in the same batch, since each file is checked individually before conversion. You can also locate single files in a standard dialog box.
